Teeth consist of 3 main parts:

The pulp contains the nerve and blood supply to keep the tooth alive.
Dentine is a hard tissue which makes up the bulk of the tooth.
Enamel is an extremely mineralised tissue, the hardest substance in the human body. It coats of the portion of the tooth you can see in the mouth.

While teeth are incredibly resilient, they cannot regenerate, unlike most other tissues in the human body. If enamel and dentine are lost due to reasons such as decay, trauma, excessive wear or erosion, treatment must be performed to restore form and function.
