Root Canal Therapy

Home – Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment is required if a tooth is producing pain due to an irritated/infected nerve, or an abscess. The root canal treatment process takes 3 to 4 appointments depending on the tooth being treated.

Initially, the damaged or dead nerve is removed and medication placed inside the tooth. Next, the internal void of the tooth is cleaned and shaped to ensure thorough removal of bacteria. More medication is placed.

Finally, the inside of the tooth is sealed with cement and filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

A post may be used to help retain a new filling, which will be placed to restore the tooth to initial function.

Once the root canal treatment is considered successful (your dentist will advise on your specific case) a crown must be fitted to reinforce and strengthen the tooth. Typically, teeth which have undergone root canal treatment become more brittle and are weak due to previous large fillings.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks.
Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
