Home – Kids Teeth Rule
As a dentist for children, we offer a very sound foundation for your child to have healthy baby teeth and to gain great rules around how to have the best possible oral care from their very first dental check-up to when their adult teeth are in and your child’s smile is complete.
Being positive about coming to the dentist starts with you, so please consider bringing your children in with you to your own checkups and also ensure you help them to learn that ‘having their teeth counted’ is a normal part of growing up.
Dentistry has come a long way in the last few decades, so fears that you might have had about this as a child can be safely left behind. This way you ensure that your children have a positive attitude to coming to have their teeth looked after.
We make this easy for you by having great dental nurses, kid friendly dentists and expert kid wranglers on hand, even when you have more than one child needing a checkup at once.
There are three golden rules that your child will learn when they come in.
Eating three to five times a day is normal for a child, but beyond that it is important that your child has gaps between meals. Acid inside their mouths causes decay and that increases when constant snacking occurs.
Food and drink which is high in sugar, sticky or acidic (like soft drinks) or even fruit damages young teeth. One simple tip is to ensure your child drinks water or milk after eating fruit.
Cleaning teeth should happen after meals to ensure the teeth are clean for a period of time every day and overnight. At least twice a day is best practice.
From an early age, flossing before the evening brush is highly recommended. After brushing, allow your child to drink water rather than other food or drink.
It takes a while to get the hang of fine motor skills. Children need help to clean their teeth until six or seven years of age. A good rule of thumb is that if they can tie their own shoelaces, kids are ready to brush their own teeth.
We always encourage you to help your children learn to clean their teeth and check them afterwards at home just in case.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks.
Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
