What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap-like casing which fits over a prepared tooth.

Dental Crowns can be made from:

  • Gold/Precious metal alloys
  • Porcelain fused to a metal alloy
  • Full porcelain
  • Zirconia
If a tooth is deemed appropriate to be crowned, at least 2 appointments will be required. At the first visit, impressions will be taken and the tooth prepared. A temporary dental crown will be placed for protection before you leave. The next appointment will be 2 to 3 weeks later. the temporary crown is removed and the final dental crown cemented and adjusted.

A crown is a suitable restoration for:

  • Teeth with more filling than natural tooth structure. the remaining tooth is very weak and can no longer support the restoration. these teeth can break or lose their fillings.
  • Teeth which have cracks or fracture lines and are also painful to bite on a crown will reinforce these teeth by holding together the separated portions of tooth.
  • Teeth which require cosmetic improvement.
A dental crown is typically required after a tooth receives Root Canal treatment.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks.
