Home – Dental Checkup
1. Clinical examination of teeth and soft tissues
The dentist will use a mirror and other instruments to check all of your teeth and the surrounding tissues for health. We will also perform an oral cancer check at this time.
There can be minor discomfort as the gums are being assessed, however this is very temporary and even children don’t mind getting their teeth checked regularly.
2. Intermittent or analytical X-rays (radiographs)
X-rays allow the dentist to check below the tooth surface and find out if there are any issues that aren’t evident to the naked eye.
We take regular x-rays to spot problems before they become larger and provide clear pathways to preventative or simple restorative treatments.
If you are suffering any pain then x-rays are required to check for underlying decay or gum disease. This is essential for the dentist to provide the appropriate treatment options.
3. Improving oral hygiene
In childhood, it takes some time and effort to learn how to brush effectively on a regular basis. While you can teach at home, in the surgery we can show your child exactly how to improve their technique from an expert perspective.
As we brush and our teeth age, bleeding and receding gums are commonplace. Our flexibility, mobility and anatomy change over the years and decades, so we all need to review and refine our brushing techniques over time.
We often fall into patterns that cause some form of gum disease or bleeding during our lifetime. If you find your gums bleed, we will show you techniques to improve their health – as healthy gums don’t bleed.
4. Scale and Polish every six months
Over six months your teeth will start to get a build-up of calculus or tartar which you can’t clean effectively at home. This needs to be removed professionally as the build-up inhibits your ability to properly clean your teeth and maintain your gums.
We scale and polish your teeth at every check-up to ensure optimal oral health.
Some people find this procedure is not that comfortable, but with gentle delivery from expert staff using the latest equipment, that’s a minimal discomfort.
We know that we can help you maintain your smile effectively and ensure that you experience the best tooth and gum health that you can.
5. Preventative Measures
Both during and following cleaning, we use palatable products that improve tooth health with ingredients such as fluoride. This six-monthly treatment helps boost your dental health on a regular basis.
6. Treatment Advice
With healthy mouths, a checkup is a relatively quick process, a scale, clean, fluoride treatment and perhaps some tips on how to improve your technique. However, you may need something more.
If you need a treatment plan or advice around how your regular habits are affecting your dental health, we sensitively guide you towards better outcomes in the future.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks.
Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
