Home – Children & Mouthguards
Congratulations! Your child wants to be fit and healthy so they’ve joined the local sports team, that’s great news!
You’re probably by now aware that the majority of contact sports teams request that children wear a mouthguard. If you or your child play any type of contact sport, you should be wearing a properly fitting mouthguard of sufficient thickness.
A mouthguard is a custom made flexible device you place over your teeth inside your mouth that is designed to protect your teeth from the force of an impact.
We understand that you might think that you have a choice to make; do you get a custom mouthguard or a generic sports guard from your local chain store? Our mouthguards are extremely impact resistant and laminated to the exact shape of your teeth.
We definitely recommend that we make a custom mouthguard fitted for you or your child for any contact sports; read on to find out why.
But first, which sports need a mouthguard?
There are two major reasons that children will need a guard:
The good news is that most health funds cover one single colour mouthguard a year for your child to get the protection they truly need.
When your child is playing sport, it’s likely you’ll need a new mouthguard every year as his or her teeth and jaw grows, so we understand that you’re wondering whether it’s really necessary.
For the sake of comfort and to reduce soft tissue damage, a custom fitted guard will always perform far better than something that is not designed for your childs’ mouth and there’s more to it than that…
If you’ve ever put on a bike helmet that didn’t fit, you’ll remember that you didn’t feel that safe in it, did you? In fact, you’d adjust the helmet before you ever got out on the track, just to make sure if something happened and there was an impact, the helmet would do its job and save your head.
Mouthguards are exactly the same. With an improper fit the child is holding the guard in place with their teeth, rather than relaxing because it fits accurately.
What that means is that they are a little distracted perhaps and certainly not as comfortable. Worse yet, the splint can often fly out when a boy or girl falls, because they get surprised at that moment of impact.
If your child hits the ground and loses teeth, this is a huge impact on their self-esteem as well as your hip pocket.
It’s really easy and more cost effective to make you a new mouth guard, far harder to make a new tooth, especially with growing children.
Our children love getting mouthguards in one colour, their sports team colours or patterns*. All you need to do is book or call us at

*most health funds cover a single one colour mouthguard per year. Extra colours or patterns do attract additional charges.
